The Long Run

Last week: 20 total miles
Listening to: no music (but my friend made a cd for me that I can't wait to check out!)
Saturday: 16 miles - 28 degrees

Well I got through the 16 miles like I knew I would. A big shout of thanks to my group who ran the first 8 miles with me - good company and conversation making the miles go by quickly. So mentally this is what I told myself. Ok, just finished 8 with my group, half way done - I'll break it down into 4 and 4. Will run out back the way we came for 4 miles, then turn around and only 4 left to take me on home. Just a fun mental miles/numbers game to make 16 miles seem a little bit easier - 4 miles at a time piece of cake, right?

We attempted to run on the trail, but it was way too uneven so we ran through the beautiful surrounding neighborhoods. It was 28 degrees, which was perfect.

On long runs it's important to replenish your energy. In the past I have used GU gel, but it started to upset my stomach. This time, for practice, I tried Honey Stinger energy chews, pink lemonade. They were yummy, but I didn't get the boost like a squishy packet of gu gives you. I also brought along a Honey Stinger gel packet, Banana flavor. Icky. I didn't taste banana at all - mostly all honey and the consistency of honey. Flavor aside, at mile 13 it did put me a kick in my step and didn't bother my stomach. So far so good.

On to week 10 of training...

Happy running!
